According To MissWit – Bacon Is The Great Uniter!

A cool and clever new bacon t-shirt caught my eye the other day when perusing the internet in “surf mode” and I thought it was something worth bringing to your attention.

This shirt, titled “BACON: The Great Uniter” features everybody’s favorite buddy, Bacon, standing united and platonically holding hands with a friendly fried egg and a piece of toast who is enjoying a hot cup of coffee. What’s not to love about that?

The shirt is brought to us by “MissWit,” alias of artist, designer and all around funster, Deborah Goldstein of Brooklyn, NY who describes herself as tragic, sinful, cynical, sarcastic and FUN, yet simultaneously a sensitive ‘little mizz’ who loves Neil Diamond, classic rock, hippity hop and be bop with equality …like a mother loves all of her children.

A creative soul, she really doesn’t concern herself with traditional rules and design paradigms; she is as much of a contradiction as the day is long. That’s just an artistically clever way of saying she is quite uniquely creative and original.

Thus, what can best be described as a “whimsical, satirical, fashionable tee shirt line” with a fun and funny website and shirts ranging from sublime jokes to delicate etchings, first drew media attention when her work was displayed for a single-day showing at a Brooklyn boutique and a reporter from The New York Observer, observed it.

Since then, she has been prominently featured on E! News Live, The New York Post, CNBC, Newsday, The NY Post’s Page Six, New York Magazine, People Magazine, Star Magazine, Metro NY, The NY Sun, The Observer, Penthouse, Wonkette.com, San Diego Jewish Journal and numerous political, entertainment and fashion blogs.

MissWit explains the true Story behind the shirt: Friends invite her away for a weekend. Emails ensue. “What food will you bring? Pesky vegetarians. Gluten-free, wheat-free needs must be tended to.” “I am not a veggie but am pretty picky about which animals I’ll eat.”

“Can we all agree on bacon?? Cause bacon tastes good!?” An almost collective reply of “YES” “Bacon is the great uniter.”

Try it out with your friends.  Many a people will cave, when it comes to bacon. Many a vegetarian are brought down from their ways. We are just the messenger of this universal almost-truth.  Face it, people love bacon.”

Available in 100% Fine Jersey Cotton – Ladies styles, offering a fitted fashion form or Unisex for a comfortable, looser fit – with color options of Yolk Gold or Navy Blue and in sizes from small to extra large.  Check it out!

1232. BACON, BOURBON, PUMPERNICKEL and RYE STUFFING

1/2 lb thick-cut bacon, chopped
1/2 cup butter
1 large onion, peeled and chopped
2 celery stalks, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons fresh rosemary
1/2 loaf day-old pumpernickel bread, cubed
1/2 loaf day-old dark rye bread, cubed
4 eggs, lightly beaten
2 teaspoons fresh thyme
2 tablespoons fresh sage leaves
1 cup toasted, chopped pecans
1 quart chicken stock (more as needed)
1/2 cup good quality bourbon whiskey

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease 9×13 inch baking dish. Place the bacon in a large, deep skillet, and cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Drain on paper towels. Pour remaining bacon fat in the skillet into a bowl. Using the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the onions, celery, garlic, and rosemary, and cook until onions are soft and transparent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the reserved bacon fat. Meanwhile, place the pumpernickel and rye bread cubes into a large bowl. Stir in the cooked bacon pieces, eggs, thyme, sage, and onion mixture, and toss to mix evenly. Stir the chicken stock and bourbon together in a bowl. Pour the chicken stock mixture over the bread mixture, adding more stock to reach desired consistency. Use your hands to evenly mix the ingredients together. Spoon stuffing mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish and pat down lightly. Bake for 45 minutes in the preheated oven or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. If you wish to have a darker crust on top, bake for an additional 10 minutes.

Top 5 Bacon-Chocolate Delights

You may have seen them in specialty shops or in fancy food magazines. Bacon-chocolate treats have been taking the specialty-food scene by storm. Granted, it’s a strange storm of meat candy and fine cacao, but that’s a tempest in which we’d be love to be stranded anytime.

Check out these Top 5 Bacon-Chocolate Delights for a sampling of the madness:

The dark-chocolate bacon bar from Vosges is a study in 62 percent cacao, rich Applewood-smoked bacon and smoked salt. This bar is a member of the Chicago-based Vosges family of chocolates, which has been wowing discriminating chocolate lovers for a few years.

The original Voges bacon bar is made of 41 percent cacao and lovely smoked Applewood bacon. The Mo’s Milk Chocolate Bacon Bar helped set the tone for crazy-sounding yet irresistible bacon-chocolate treats treasured by discerning lovers of bacon and chocolate.

Boss Hogg’s Bacon-Chocolate Sueyts are a great option for another chocolate-laced indulgence. These delicious little lumps mix salty, savory bacon with dark cacao in a single tempting treat. Crispy pieces of Boss Hog Bacon are chopped into chunks and blended with dark chocolate.

For another twist, check out the Sir Francis Bacon Brittle-Chocolate Peanut Brittle. It’s a surprising all-natural combination of smoked artisanal bacon and peanuts grown in the United States that’s likely different than any brittle you’ve had.

Pig Candy comes from Roni-Sue’s Chocolates, a small New York City producer in the Essex Street Market that makes this cool version of chocolatey meat candy. It’s essentially crispy bacon that’s been dunked into your choice of milk or dark chocolate. It’s salty, sweet and so delicious, plus it’s available by the pound. Need we say more?

There you have it, lovers of chocolate-bacon delights. Buy now and either get ready to stuff some stockings or hoard them for yourself. Or do the right thing and spread holiday cheer by doing both!

Bacon Pic of the Day – Disneyland Bacon FAIL!

As mentioned, I was in California all last week visitin’ family and takin’ Lil’ Baird to on her first trip to the land that the giant rat built.

After sufficiently scaring my little girl with a succession of the Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean and the very first part of the Haunted Mansion it was off to Critter Country to settle her down with a dose of Winnie the Pooh and friends.  They had a restaurant over there, so we decided to settle in for lunch.  Being the growin’ boy that I am I ordered the 1/3 lb. bacon cheeseburger.  Get back to the table, peel back the foil and what do I find?

Come on Disney!! I know you got a ton of mouths to feed, but for over $10 I expect a little more on the bacon front than two small, thin slivers of pork!  You are supposed to be the happiest place on earth!!!

Bacon bikini contest was bogus

Bacon bikini babeSteve Lightfoot, owner of Lightfoot's California Cuisine in Roseville, CA, held a bacon bikini contest for the charity Jordan Lightfoot Foundation for Juvenile Diabetes, named after his daughter who has diabetes.  He sold raffle tickets and a whopping $110 was raised.  It turns out that the charity does not exist and Mr. Lightfoot decided that he needed the money, so he kept it.

The results of this wrongdoing?
  • Mr. Lightfoot's daughter has turned against him
  • He was exposed on local television, the internet and the world of bacon
  • The owner of the property where the restaurant was located has kicked him out and taken his name off of the building
  • Kurtis Ming of Sacramento’s CBS 13 who was covering the event hounded Mr. Lightfoot until he gave the funds to the Sacramento Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
All of this for $110.  I'm not saying that what he did wasn't wrong, but it's too bad that this attention and outrage could not be directed toward the financial and health care industries that are bleeding this country dry.

Here is a video of the debacle.  Please note that the first contestant should not ever wear a bikini of any kind.

Bacon won! Bacon won!

Bacon wrapped hot dogWay back in September, Farmer John and Andre Ethier (an MLB All-Star people!) held a contest to name the Official Hot Dog of Los Angeles.

The votes are now in and the bacon wrapped hot dog has been elected.  It's not like there was ever any doubt.  Not only does bacon put another notch in its proverbial belt, but even more important, Farmer John donated one pound of food for each vote received, which makes 52,559 pounds of food provided to Los Angeles food banks Union Rescue Mission and Angel Harvest Food Bank.  That's a lot of food.  I'm hoping a lot of it is bacon, because even the less fortunate need bacon.

It is wonderful when bacon can make such a big contribution to society and be delicious at the same time.
