The Ultimate Bacon Treats

As you may know, desserts are one of our favourite meals, and they are even better with the addition of bacon. Last year we created a list of the top 25 Bacon Dessert Recipes and this year we decided to follow through and create a list of the top 2012 bacon dessert recipes. This list [...]

Flavour Pair: Bacon and Caramelized Onions

Every once in a while I become obsessed with a particular combination of flavours. There was a whole week last year where almost everything I ate contained some combination of peanut butter and banana. More recently, I went on a roasted red pepper and goat cheese kick, finding every possible way to combine these flavours, [...]

Bacon and Lobster – A Perfect Pairing

If there was ever a dish that represented wealth, richness, and indulgence, it would be lobster. Whenever a particularly important celebration is taking place, I know exactly what I am going to order: the biggest lobster tail I can find, all that sweet and tender flesh just waiting to be dipped in butter. If you [...]

Hot Bacon Beverages

As much as it pains me to say it, the time of iced coffees and cold everything is sadly over. There’s something about a latte when its on ice that makes me forget I’m drinking enough caffeine to make my heart feel like it’s going to explode, which somehow makes me feel less guilty. That [...]

Bacon Grease Week – You Got Some, Now Use Some…

It’s easy to come up with recipes that use bacon grease in exchange of whatever fat you may typically use, especially in baking or frying…but what about other ways to use the drippings from our favorite meat?

Here’s a few to “chew on”:

Shoo Fly! – Mix in a little bit of vegetable oil to make it a little more runny and sticky. Dump in a pie tin or Styrofoam plate and set out where you don’t want to be “bugged”. The bugs will get stuck when they land in the greasy goodness.  Then all you have to do is trash the container. Start my fire – Grab a paper cup and some paper towels, stuff the towels in the cup and then pour in the grease.  Let that set and you’ve got a simple fire starter that will burn clean and hot, almost guaranteed to get the blaze a goin’. Polish leather – Believe it or not it’s an inexpensive way to replace leather shoe polish. A dab of cooled bacon grease on a rag helps boots, belts, shoes, etc. to shine.  Heal those heels - Before bed, dab some grease on the dry parts of your feet and put on a pair of socks. Just make sure you wash up good and proper in the morning or you’ll have all the dogs in the neighborhood chasin’ you.

Clean yourself - Yup, any fat can be used to make soap, including bacon grease… Start my fire – Grab a paper cup and some paper towels, stuff the towels in the cup and then pour in the grease.  Let that set and you’ve got a simple fire starter that will burn clean and hot, almost guaranteed to get the blaze a goin’. For the birds - Here’s a fun little craft.  Grab some pine cones, smear them with the grease and then roll in bird seed.  Viola, a natural bird feeder. Make the medicine go down – Puppy won’t have any problem taking their pills when you coat them in bacon grease.

No matter what you end up doing with it, I can guarantee you’d love making it!

Bacon Comfort Food

Depending on the season, we all eat differently. Every spring, I suddenly find myself craving all the lovey fresh vegetables that the season has to offer. In the summer, my taste buds develop a love for everything light and refreshing, like lots of fruits and salads, and of course the ubiquitous summer barbeque. And when [...]

Get Your Bacon Java at Seattle’s Best…

Last week, a lovely woman from Iowa by the name of Eileen Gannon won a contest sponsored by Seattle’s Best Coffee with a drink she named “How to Win a Guy in One Sip”.  For her efforts, she pocketed a cool $10K.  Ka-Pow!

Her submission was a pumpkin pie spiced and bacon flavored cup of awesomeness!  Sounds good, right?  Well, if you have a “participating” Seattle’s Best Coffee near you, you’ll get a change to try it. Can’t wait, you can get her recipe over on Seattle’s Best Coffee’s facespace page (you’ll need to like it, just a heads up).

Well play Eileen, well played!

Colored Bacon

Neil Caldwell has come up with something that is pure genius. He has created the color wheel of bacon!

No, this bacon was not a victim of photoshop. This is real colored bacon. And you can eat it! Nom, nom, nom!

In the photos above, you can see the raw bacon in their color bowls and the cooked colored bacon below it. Notice how well the color is retained? Seriously awesome!

It’s probably the most delicious rainbow we’ve ever seen. Put some golden tots at the end of this bacon rainbow and you’ll definitely get lucky. Show your Bacon Pride!

Maybe this rainbow would work if you used bacon jerky?
