Catch A Ride on the Bacon Food Truck Trend

bacon-trucks

The food truck trend is just as hot as the bacon trend. New food trucks are popping up everywhere, and food truck events, where many trucks gather in one location, are becoming popular in urban centers. Unlike the bacon trend, there is a downside to the food truck trend: some trucks are disappearing almost as quickly as they appear. But several well-known trucks (and some not-so-well-known) are proof that bacon and food trucks haven’t nearly jumped the shark yet. Here’s a list of the best bacon food trucks and trailers still in operation. Check back later for a “Top 10 BBQ & Pork Food Trucks” post. Are you lucky enough to have one of these baconcentric trucks in your neighborhood?

Bacon Bacon – San Francisco

Bacon Bacon has had its share of difficulties lately. In 2012 their truck caught on fire, and complaints from suspected vegetarian neighbors are threatening to temporarily shut down their cafe location. Fan support has been strong, and this popular truck serves up a bounty of bacon items like the grilled cheese sandwich with bacon and bacon jam and the Triple B Taco with pork butt, pork belly and bacon. Even the fries have pork belly trimmings!

Bacon MANia – NorCal and SoCal

Another California favorite, Bacon Mania has two trucks, one serving the Sacramento area, and another that visits Orange County. BaconMANia describes its food as “unabashedly American, unapologetic man-food.” Dishes include Mac’N Bac’N French Fries, All-American Sliders made with 50% ground bacon, and the “PB & J,” which is wrapped in Applewood Smoked Bacon and deep-fried.

The Bacon Trolley – St. Paul, MN

Serving up Modern American Street Food with a pork-based menu, the Bacon Trolley can be found on the streets of St. Paul, Minnesota. Their signature sandwich is called “The Spanker,” a BBQ pork sandwich topped with strips of bacon. For the more adventurous, there’s “The Elvis,” a peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwich.

Pig on the Street – Vancouver BC

Our neighbors to the north can enjoy the offerings of “Pig on the Street.” Catch them on an upcoming episode of the Cooking Channel’s “Eat St.” on June 3rd. Their bacon-topped soups come with a bacon-cheese stir stick, and their signature sandwich, “The Porker,” has double-smoked bacon, sausage and bacon stuffing, gouda, greens, apple and cider chutney.

The Bacon Lover’s Truck – Addison, TX

This Kickstarter success story is also known as the “B.L.T.” This relatively new truck serves a variety of sandwiches where “bacon is the star.” The Morning After breakfast sandwich is served on a homemade honey butter biscuit and has maple bacon, scrambled eggs and fried potatoes. The Caprese has grilled beefsteak tomatoes, locally-made mozzarella, basil pesto and applewood smoked bacon.

The Caveman Truck – Indianapolis, IN

Emblazoned with their “Bacon > Gluten” logo and a picture that is reminiscent of Captain Caveman (if you’re under 30, Google it), this truck is the first to adhere to the Paleo diet. Its menu is bacon-heavy and includes menu items such as bacon hash and bacon chili.

Trailer Park Truck – Los Angeles

Bacon is featured in almost every menu item at this food truck. Try Big Dave’s Mac and Bacon Melt, mac and cheese and bacon grilled between white bread, the Blue Ribbon Frito Pie which is topped with bacon crumbles, or their bacon-topped Shotgun Shells and Cheese.

Almost everything is deep-fried on this bacon-centric menu. Offerings include Miss Piggy’s Nachos—bacon-flavored tortilla chips , jalapeno cheese and crumbled bacon, and Porky’s Revenge, chicken-fried bacon.

Bacon Festivals 2013

2013-bacon-festivals Coming soon to a city near you: Baconfest 2013!

Bacon Festivals are gaining popularity not only in the US but around the world as well. In case you haven’t heard of this phenomenon, a Baconfest is a place where bacon fans can gather and try out a seemingly endless variety of bacon dishes and bacon cocktails, and participate in events that celebrate their love for the almighty bacon. The recent rise in bacon’s popularity can be seen by looking at past ticket sales to the Des Moines Blue Ribbon Baconfest, one of the most popular bacon festivals in the US. 200 tickets were sold in 2008, 1500 tickets were sold in 2011, and a whopping 8,000 tickets were sold in 2013. Tickets to the 2013 festival sold out in 3 minutes and 22 seconds!

What other kinds of activities go on at a bacon festival, besides lots of eating and drinking? “The Blue Ribbon Festival offers participants extensive bacon sampling, bacon lectures, bacon-inspired dishes, bacon competitions, an annual bacon queen, bacon awards, live entertainment and bacon camaraderie.” The types of dishes and cocktails served are highly imaginative and quite extensive. This list of dishes served at the Blue Ribbon Festival contains almost 60 unique items.

A small army of chefs prepared the 6,000 lbs. of bacon that these dishes required, which means that each attendee consumed almost a pound of bacon. This mouth-watering video shows how the bacon was prepared.

Last weekend, Chicago’s Baconfest took place in the windy city, and for this event, 5,700 pounds of bacon were prepared for 3,000 festival attendees. That translates to almost 2 lbs. of bacon consumed for each attendee! The list of dishes ranged from simple to complex, with items such as bacon musubi, bacon tartlets, bacon donuts, bacon churros, bacon pierogis, bacon waffles, bacon macn ‘n’ cheese, and many, many more. Here are pictures and descriptions of some of these amazing dishes. The only “complaint” from this attendee was that everything he owned smelled like bacon afterward!

So if you’re wondering when and if a Bacon Festival is coming to a city near you, check out this list with links to each festival’s website. If you’re lucky enough to live near one of these cities, plan on purchasing tickets as soon as they go on sale, as the popularity of these festivals means that tickets sell out almost immediately. If you don’t live near one of these cities, don’t despair. A Bacon Festival is the perfect excuse to take a mini-vacation, and sampling endless bacon dishes, beers and cocktails is the ideal way to spend a weekend.

The Bacon Diet

There are many diets out there in the world. Everyone’s looking for that shortcut; that way to lose ten pounds within a week. “Oh my God, I have a wedding to go to this weekend and I need to look good! My ex will be there! I have to get rid of these ten pounds by then! Help!”

There definitely are some “get thin” quick routes. Unfortunately none of them are very healthy and most will have you piling the weight back on when you return to your regular eating habits. So when we talk about a bacon diet, this isn’t one of those: “You can get super thin fast with eating just bacon!” articles. No. Stop. That’s just stupid. Please don’t ever think that this would be possible.

So this is where you ask: What is this ‘Bacon Diet’ you speak of? I’m imagining strips of bacon for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Can bacon really be a part of a healthy diet?

The answer is: Yes, it can. As long as you’re not trying to immediately lose weight, you can incorporate bacon into your diet. Believe it or not, it’s usually best to choose bacon when you’re faced between a side of sausage or bacon. Although both meats are high in fat and saturated fat, two links of sausage will cost you a bit more in calories and fat than three strips of bacon. 2 pork sausage breakfast links (45 g) have 140 calories, 12 grams fat, 4 grams saturated fat, 30 mg cholesterol, 7 grams protein, and 310 mg sodium. 3 hickory smoked bacon strips, pan-fried (26 g) have 120 calories, 9 grams fat, 3.8 grams saturated fat, 30 mg cholesterol, 7.5 grams protein, and 435 mg sodium.

However, (Ugh, you knew there was a catch, didn’t you?), you should try not to indulge on bacon everyday. When you do treat yourself, keep the serving size small, and include antioxidant-rich fruits or vegetables in the meal. Cut down on eating other processed meats such as ham, sausage, hot dogs, bologna, salami, pepperoni, and pastrami. Processed meats are any meat that is preserved with smoking, curing or salting. When you do indulge in the sultry bacon, chop or crumble it, so one slice goes a long way. Bacon is still a good source of protein. Therefore add it to your salads. It’s also best to use real bacon as opposed to the bacon bits.

In conclusion: If any site boasts having a Bacon Diet plan, run away. Run far, far away. Bacon isn’t called the meat candy for no reason at all. Just like candy, it’s addicting and should be enjoyed in moderation if you’re worried about your weight (or cholesterol, for that matter). If you’re not, then we envy you and say, “Enjoy that meat candy! Enjoy it damn it!”

The Bacon Weave Grilled Cheese…

Really, who needs bread when you’ve got yourself a couple bacon weaves…

This work of brilliance from the fine men over at DudeFoods.com.

It’s been almost four years writing this blog.  I have seen the “bacon weave” countless of times, countless!  Never had I had the thought to use it as “bread”.  And here I thought I was creative…

Well played gentlemen, well played.

Mr. Guancialepants: Is Guanciale Better than Bacon

Thestate.com is making a pretty bold claim that Guanciale might actually be better than bacon. You’re probably thinking right now, “What the heck is Guanciale and how do you even pronounce that?” Well I’m told it’s pronounced “gwahn-CHAY-lay” and it comes from the pork jowl or cheek.

Now some people might be turned off by eating a little head meat but that doesn’t bother me at all. I found that some of the best cuts can come from an animal’s cheeks. The thing that’s turning me off is the better than bacon claim. I have never had a chance to try Guanciale but I find it hard to think anything can be better than bacon.

They suggest using Guanciale in place of bacon when cooking and that might work if you’re making a salad, casserole, or even a burger but I would be interested to see how Guanciale holds up in a cupcake recipe.

But who knows? I don’t really like to pass judgment on a food before tasting it so maybe Guanciale is better than bacon and we should change the name of our website to Mr. Guancialepants. I highly doubt it though.

Chicken Souvlaki Recipe with Bacon in a Pita – “The Greek BLT”

When I was living with my parents, we would frequently visit the local Greek restaurant. Love the food, love the flavours. I haven’t been back in a remarkably long time and I was craving a nice big souvlaki on a pita. So I fired up the grill and made one for myself – and boy [...]

It’s Official, the Bacon Nation Now has a Mrs. Baconpants

As many of you noticed I was MIA for almost two months, but don’t worry I have a good reason for the absence.

September was a busy month. Not only did I have to plan Pittsburgh’s biggest bacon event, I also had to help Beth plan our wedding. It seemed scheduling two important events in the same month was not my best idea.

Then, after the wedding (I will tell you all about that soon), Beth and I enjoyed our honeymoon and spent a lot of time getting our house back in order. We had crafting supplies everywhere from before the wedding and wrapping paper, boxes, and tons of new things from after.

I guess what I am trying to say is… I didn’t have time for Baconpants.

That’s going to change and now I have a Mrs. Baconpants (aka Beth Mosley) to help me share our love of all things beer and bacon!

Now on to the details. The wedding was great and everyone had an amazing time. Sean (aka Bacon Knight) was in my wedding party and he inspected all the bacon that day to make sure it was perfect. We had a whole station of bacon on the buffet which had: Bacon Mac and Cheese, bacon wrapped stuffed mushrooms, pulled pork (not bacon but close), and a lot more stuff that I can’t remember. I was a little nervous so I didn’t eat much that day.

For our wedding cake we had Maple Bacon Cupcakes and they were fantastic. We also has red velvet, but I told everyone that they would be a weirdo if they skipped on the bacon cupcake. I am not sure why people are so afraid of bacon on desserts. They don’t know what they are missing.

Don’t worry, I am done boring you with my wedding details but I am sure you were all wondering if we had bacon at our wedding. We did and it was perfect.

A day to celebrate one of Pittsburgh’s favorite foods, BACON!

Pittsburgh’s only bacon event, Bacon Bash, will take place at the Harris Grill in Shadyside on Saturday, September 17 from 12 pm to 3 pm. “When I made it known that I needed bacon, I was surprised how many bacon purveyors stepped up to show support,” said Mosley.

Wrights Brand Bacon, Tender Belly, Sugardale and more are supplying the bacon for this years event. Not to be outdone, Miller Light will be sponsoring tee shirts for all bacon lovers in attendance.

Several bacon appetizers and small plates will be served at Bacon Bash. An exciting addition to this year’s Bash will be Maple Bacon Gelato from Bite Bistro in Bellevue, PA. As is tradition, the event also will feature the Bacon Eating Contest for a chance to win fabulous bacon prizes.
