Better with Bacon – Maple Bacon S’mores…

That’s right, I said MAPLE…..BACON…..S’MORES!

Homemade maple bacon marshmallows!!  People, what more needs to be said?!?  I think I found my next “Test Kitchen” recipe!

Maple Bacon S’mores

Ingredients:

1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, divided (1/8 for bacon, 1/8 for marshmallows)
6 slices hickory smoked bacon
Unflavored cooking spray
4 1/2 teaspoons unflavored powdered gelatin
1/2 cup cold water
2/3 cup white sugar
1/2 cup maple syrup (use the high quality stuff here)
1/4 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup water (filtered or bottled preferably)
1/3 teaspoon fine grain sea salt
1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar
1/3 cup corn starch
Graham crackers, for serving
Bittersweet chocolate, for serving

Bacon Tea?!?

Yes, bacon flavored tea…this one is scaring me a little and I am not one who is easily scared…

So I was this close to picking this up until I read this:

Ingredients: Tea, immitation bacon bits, natural flavors.

Hmmmm.

First, immitation (sic) bacon bits?  No thank you.

Second, natural flavors? I’m guessing that is only maple essence.  The only natural flavoring from bacon comes from bacon fat and I really don’t think they steeped the leaves in pig grease…

So yeah for the idea, boo for execution.

Not buying this, but feel free if you feel so inclined.  If you do, tell me about it…

How Many Licks?

So I was bouncin’ through a bunch of  my bacon Google Alerts (look at that fine example of aliteration right there) and came across a link to this post from Gizmodo about the author’s trip to The Candy Expo.

Before I go further with the relevant bacon news, let me just say “Candy Expo” – hells yeah!  I have got to find a way to one day get into that show!  There are certain trade events that I have always wanted to attend (like CES) and some that I have crossed off the list (Toy Fair).  This goes right to the top baby!!  Maybe I can get a press pass next year on behalf of TDB???  Hmmmm.

Anywho – this is what I wanted to draw your attention too…

It’s called “Man Bait” and it is a BACON FLAVORED LOLLIPOP!!!KA-POW!

From the maker’s website:

Bacon lovers unite-finally, you can have your dessert that also contains your favorite food group- Bacon!.  This maple and bacon lolli that’s a fiercely delicious combination of real smoky bacon bits and delicious maple syrup giving all at once savory and sweet sensation.

Note: Our lollipops are made with no corn syrup and delicious natural fruit, herb and spice extracts.

Ingredients: sugar, rice syrup, bacon bits, salt, natural smoke flavor, natural bacon flavor, natural maple flavor

And here’s the review from the Gizmodo story:

As gross as it sounds, a lollipop filled with real chunks of bacon, it was the single greatest thing I tasted at the show. Just enough bacon mixes with just enough maple to create a salty/sweet treat that lasted about 20x longer than any strip of bacon you’ve ever consumed.

It doesn’t sound gross at all.  It sounds YUMMY!

I’ve ordered a few pops today and I’ll let you know what they are like when I get them.  Maybe if a few of you are good little boys and girls, I’ll even share ;-)

Taste Test – Snackle Mouth…

is gonna smack you in your mouth!

Snackle Mouth is a “gourmet” granola company out of Boulder, CO. that prides itself in it clusters with a high degree of “clumpability”.

These kind folks reached out and asked if I’d be willing to try their newest flavor – Bacon Maple.

The first thing I noticed…cooked bacon is listed as an ingredient!  BAM!  Those who frequent TDB know that I don’t have much tolerance for bacon flavored food that has no real bacon in it.  So Snackle Mouth was already ahead of many others.

Let’s crack this bad boy open…

Man I need a better camera.  My poor photos aside, you can still clearly see their product lives up to that promise of “clumpability”.

Second thing I noticed was the delicious smell sweet of maple.

So true granola nut clusters, aroma of maple…time to eat…and…

YUM!

Seriously, I really like this.  The sweetness of the maple and agave, full almonds and pecans surrounded by crunchy oats and a hint of sea salt.  Sweet and savory baby!

But as good as it is, I missed the bacon.  It’s physically there!  There are bits of bacon all over.  You just can’t really taste it.

I’m not going to quibble too much though because it’s a real good product! Plus, they get those real bacon points.

But hey, don’t take my word for it…I got two boxes I’m gonna give away to TDB’ers on Facespace.  The contest starts tomorrow.  If you win, hit me with a note and let me know if I missed anything.
